Reality at the Speed of Thought
How Human Intention Became an Evolutionary Force in the Age of AI
Several months ago, I began a conversation with an artificial intelligence system because I had an idea I could feel but could not yet explain.
I do not remember the exact first sentence I typed, and I will not pretend I do. What I remember is the frustration. The system kept giving me responses that were polished, coherent, and somehow wrong. Not factually wrong. Wrong in the way a perfectly reasonable sentence can fail to contain the thought you know is there. So I kept correcting it.
The machine would offer a formulation. I would reject part of it, preserve another part, and try again. It asked questions. I answered. Connections appeared that I had sensed but had not been able to name. At some point, the nature of the exchange changed.
I was no longer using AI to find an answer.
I was using it to discover what I thought.
The machine had not originated the idea. It had not supplied the curiosity or decided the question mattered. It had not recognized the pattern before I did. The intention was mine. But the machine had given that intention somewhere to go.
A feeling became language. Language became a framework. And the framework revealed a possibility that has stayed with me ever since: Artificial intelligence may matter not only because it can produce information, imitate expertise, or perform intellectual work. It may matter because it shortens the distance between what a human being can imagine and what that human being can make real.
The pattern was familiar. I have repeatedly been drawn to ideas during their awkward stage, before they become obvious enough to look inevitable. I co-created the Hollywood 48 Hour Miracle Diet and helped bring it into national retail before “detox” became a familiar consumer category. Later, I developed alternative paths for working adults to earn college degrees when online education was still far from ordinary.
I was not predicting the future. I was recognizing patterns while they were still incomplete.
Ideas rarely arrive as finished plans. They begin as discomfort, attraction, a suspicion that several disconnected things belong together. The difficult part is not always having the thought. It is holding the thought in place long enough to understand it. For most of history, reality made that difficult. Ideas were cheap. Reality was expensive.
A person could imagine a cure, a company, a machine, a movement, or a new understanding of the universe, but imagination alone changed nothing. Between thought and reality stood years of labor, scarce knowledge, inaccessible expertise, repeated failure, lost money, public ridicule, and sometimes an entire lifetime.
Civilization was built inside that distance. Every bridge, city, university, business, scientific theory, political institution, and work of art began as something absent. Before it was concrete, law, or machinery, it was a future visible to someone and invisible to almost everyone else.
Civilization is the evidence left behind when certain thoughts refuse to disappear. On December 17, 1903, a machine made of wood, cloth, wire, and bicycle technology lifted from the sand at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Orville Wright remained in the air for twelve seconds and traveled 120 feet, shorter than the length of many modern passenger airplanes.
The flight was unimpressive by every standard except the one that mattered. It happened.
For thousands of years, people had watched birds and imagined joining them. The dream survived in myths, drawings, experiments, prayers, and wreckage. Many attempts failed. Some ended in humiliation. Others ended in death.
The Wright brothers failed too. What distinguished them was not that they were the first to dream of flight. It was that they kept working before success had supplied its own proof. Sixty-six years later, human beings stood on the Moon.
History often looks inevitable after it happens. It almost never feels inevitable while it is happening. Every transformation begins with a mismatch: one person can see a possible world that the surrounding world cannot yet see. I think of intention as what begins to bridge that mismatch.
The word is easy to misunderstand. I do not mean that wishing intensely enough forces the universe to comply. Desire cannot replace evidence, work, skill, resources, luck, timing, or circumstance. Intention is not a supernatural command.
By intention, I mean an imagined future beginning to organize attention, decisions, effort, and action in the present. It is what happens when something that does not yet exist begins influencing what you do now.
For billions of years, evolution proceeded through biological inheritance. Mutations appeared. Environments tested them. Traits that improved survival and reproduction sometimes spread. Then a species emerged that could alter its environment without waiting for its genes to change. Human beings did not have to wait for biology to produce wings.
We built airplanes. We did not have to evolve fur thick enough to survive winter. We created clothing, shelter, fire, and cities. We did not have to wait for our bodies to defeat every disease on their own. We developed medicine. Agriculture, writing, democracy, science, and the internet were not genetic mutations. They were products of cultural evolution: ideas and practices that could be learned, shared, modified, and transmitted far faster than biological traits.
Evolution did not abandon genes and begin obeying thoughts. Human imagination became capable of changing the environment in which human life unfolds. Our species began participating in the conditions of its own development.
We became the animal that turns imagination into geography. Every person alive is living inside the intentions of strangers. The road beneath your car, the medicine in your cabinet, the school your child attends, the device in your hand: each contains decisions made by people who could not have known your name. Their intentions became your environment. Which means your intentions may one day become someone else’s.
The future often begins long before it looks like a plan. It begins as dissatisfaction, curiosity, a question that will not leave, a sense that the world is incomplete.
Years ago, Wayne Dyer described intention as a force moving possibility toward manifestation. Some readers understood that spiritually. Others dismissed it as mystical. Both reactions can obscure a more immediate truth.
Intention does not need to violate nature to exert power. It only needs to change what a person notices, attempts, and continues.
Neuroscience does not prove that thought creates reality. It does, however, challenge the assumption that perception is a neutral recording of a complete world. In predictive-processing theories associated with neuroscientist Karl Friston and others, the brain continually generates expectations, compares them with incoming signals, and revises its internal model. Attention influences which signals receive greater weight. The framework remains debated, but the narrow point is defensible: perception involves selection and interpretation, not passive reception.
A familiar attentional effect makes the point more modestly. Once you begin considering a particular car, you seem to notice it everywhere. The cars were already there. Your attention changed.
The same shift can occur when you decide to start a business, improve your health, understand your child, repair a relationship, write a book, or change your life. Patterns appear. Conversations acquire relevance. Possibilities become visible.
The world does not necessarily change first.
You do.
Intention influences what you notice. What you notice affects what you consider possible. What you consider possible shapes what you attempt. What you attempt can change what becomes real.
This is not manifestation by magic. It is a person reorganizing around a possible future. Until recently, even a reorganized person faced reality’s resistance.
You might see an opportunity but lack the knowledge to pursue it. You might imagine a product but lack the engineers to build it. You might recognize a pattern but have no way to test it. You might carry a story for years because the words would not come.
The intention existed.
The path did not.
Artificial intelligence changes that relationship – not everywhere, not perfectly, and not without new dangers, but measurably.
In a controlled experiment involving 453 college-educated professionals completing writing tasks, Shakked Noy and Whitney Zhang found that access to ChatGPT reduced average completion time by 40 percent and increased independently rated quality by 18 percent. The largest gains went to participants who had initially performed less well.
The result suggests more than efficiency. For some participants, AI narrowed the gap between what they intended to produce and what they could produce.
A separate experiment led by Anil Doshi and Oliver Hauser found that people given access to generative-AI ideas wrote short stories judged more creative, better written, and more enjoyable, with the strongest gains among participants who had scored lower on creativity before the task.
Then came the complication. The stories also became more similar to one another. The technology increased individual performance while reducing variation across the group.
That may be one of the defining tensions of the AI era. The same tool can help more people express an idea while quietly pulling their ideas toward the statistical center. It can expand the number of creators and narrow the range of creation.
For Randy Travis, the distance between intention and possibility had become painfully literal. After a stroke in 2013 left him with aphasia and severely limited his ability to speak or sing, one of country music’s most recognizable voices largely disappeared from new recordings.
More than a decade later, his longtime collaborators used artificial intelligence to help create a new vocal performance. Singer James Dupré recorded a guide track. AI models trained on recordings from across Travis’s career transformed that performance toward the sound of his voice. Producer Kyle Lehning and engineer Casey Wood then spent hours adjusting the phrasing, timing, vibrato, and tone until the result felt recognizably his.
When Travis first heard the completed song, his wife recalled, he lowered his head and became emotional.
The machine did not decide to make the song. It did not choose the material, supply the guide performance, determine what sounded authentic, or understand why hearing that voice again mattered.
Human intention directed every stage.
AI allowed that intention to cross a barrier the body could no longer cross alone.
But the same achievement carries its own warning. A technology capable of restoring a consenting artist’s voice can also reproduce a person’s identity without permission. The distance between recovery and impersonation may be nothing more than consent, control, and the intentions of the people operating the system.
The technology did not resolve the boundary between human expression and machine capability.
It made that boundary impossible to ignore.
That is what happened, on a smaller scale, in my own conversation.
I had begun with the feeling that the public debate about AI was focused on the wrong protagonist. Everyone was asking what machines would become. How intelligent would they get? Which jobs would they replace? Would they become conscious? Would they surpass us?
But the experience unfolding in front of me was not fundamentally about the machine. It was about what happened to a human intention when a machine could respond to it instantly.
Much of what we call thinking begins before language. It begins as recognition, tension, instinct, a fragment, a suspicion that two things are connected. Many such thoughts disappear not because they are worthless, but because turning them into something usable requires time, vocabulary, confidence, expertise, and sustained attention.
A conversational AI can hold an unfinished thought in place. It can question it, challenge it, compare it, give it structure. A feeling becomes language. Language becomes a framework. A framework becomes something another person can see, test, criticize, or build. None of that begins with the machine. It begins with a curiosity, a need, a frustration, a question the person cannot stop asking.
The intention is human.
The amplification comes from AI.
A person who cannot code can describe the behavior of a program and begin constructing software. A teacher can adapt a lesson for one child. An entrepreneur can test an idea before assembling a company. Someone who has never considered herself a writer can give language to what she has carried for years.
You may already have felt it.
You begin with a half-formed thought. You type a sentence. The system responds. You correct it. It asks something you had not considered. Somewhere in the exchange, you recognize something that feels less like an answer than a part of yourself you had not been able to articulate. That is real expansion. It is also where the danger begins. The shrinking distance between thought and reality sounds like uncomplicated progress.
It is not.
For most of history, that distance performed another function. Reality was not merely an obstacle. Reality was a filter.
Ideas encountered resistance. Weak intentions faded. Confused impulses often died before they could spread. To alter the world, an idea generally had to survive time, criticism, scarcity, coordination, and repeated failure.
Friction was never fair. It excluded talented people, protected gatekeepers, and gave wealth and institutional access an enormous advantage. It also slowed manifestation. A person could feel rage in the morning and reconsider before fabricating convincing evidence, designing a campaign, or mobilizing thousands of people. A lie could travel, but it required messengers. A fantasy could become a movement, but it required organization. Manipulation demanded time, skill, money, or access.
Friction was oppressive for some and protective for others. It was still a partial civilizational safety mechanism. We are weakening it.
AI can help a brilliant idea become real faster. It can help a destructive idea become real faster. It can amplify curiosity and obsession, creativity and manipulation, discovery and delusion. The amplifier does not choose the signal.
Humans do.
What happens when ordinary human intention acquires extraordinary leverage?
Imagine billions of people equipped with systems that can convert language into plans, images, code, persuasion, synthetic intimacy, scientific hypotheses, and coordinated action. Some will use them to search for cures, create art, build companies, educate children, and translate knowledge across languages and class.
Others will automate deception, mimic authority, intensify resentment, manufacture evidence, and convert private fantasies into public consequences.
The technology cannot determine which future arrives. Outcomes also reflect the incentives surrounding it, the institutions deploying it, and the judgment governing its use. The nearer danger may not be that machines become too intelligent. It may be that human intention becomes more powerful before human judgment catches up.
For most of history, knowledge was scarce. Expertise was difficult to acquire and expensive to access. Many people were excluded from creation not because they lacked imagination, but because they lacked the technical language, institutional permission, money, education, or collaborators required to act.
Now many useful cognitive capabilities are becoming widely available. Information can be organized. Possibilities can be generated. Drafts can become prototypes. Creation can begin with a sentence.
As those capabilities spread, something else becomes more valuable: direction, judgment, taste, restraint.
The ability to decide what is worth pursuing.
The ability to distinguish a meaningful question from an addictive distraction.
The ability to imagine a desirable future rather than merely an achievable one. In some domains, intelligence may cease to be the bottleneck.
Intention may take its place.
The defining skill of the next century may not be knowing more. It may be wanting more wisely. That reaches beyond technology.
Most people are not trying to invent an airplane or reorganize civilization. They are trying to raise a child, repair a relationship, begin again, build something of their own, say what they have never managed to say, or become someone they can already imagine but have not yet become. Every life contains possible futures that never become real.
Some disappear because circumstances make them impossible. Others disappear because the future remains too shapeless to trust. The first step stays unclear. Fear becomes louder than intention. Years pass. The unlived life hardens into an explanation: I am not that kind of person. I missed my chance. I would not know where to begin.
AI cannot supply courage. It cannot decide what your life should mean. It cannot care on your behalf or make an empty ambition worthy. It cannot guarantee that the future you imagine is wise, possible, or good.
But it can reduce the distance between “I wonder” and “I understand,” between “I wish” and “Here is a first step,” between “I can see it” and “Now someone else can see it too.”
That matters because people often abandon their intentions before failure, while the future is still too shapeless to attempt.
Once a possible future becomes clear enough, it begins exerting force on the present. Attention reorganizes around it. Choices move toward it. A person begins behaving as though another reality might be possible before success has made it obvious.
Intention is the act of allowing a future that does not yet exist to influence what you do today.
AI accelerates that feedback loop. It lets us interact with possible futures sooner. We can describe them, test them, revise them, simulate them, criticize them, and share them before they exist in the physical world.
Not completely. Atoms still resist. Bodies still age. Resources remain finite. Institutions move slowly. Human relationships cannot be automated without losing something essential.
But the gap is narrowing enough to alter civilization.
When the cost of creation falls, more people create. When the cost of expression falls, more people speak. When the cost of experimentation falls, more futures compete to exist.
This will produce astonishing beauty. It will also produce overwhelming noise. The challenge will not simply be generating possibilities. It will be choosing among them. Not everything we can create deserves to exist. Not every impulse deserves amplification. Not every efficient future is humane. Not every optimized life is meaningful.
The most important question may no longer be, Can we do this? It may become, What is this intention serving?
These questions cannot be outsourced. They are not technical questions. They are human questions, and the more powerful our tools become, the more consequential our answers become.
Several months ago, I began with a thought I could not express. I placed it into a machine, argued with what came back, and slowly recognized the idea I had been trying to see.
That process produced this essay. Elsewhere, versions of the same process are producing software, medicines, businesses, political campaigns, weapons, discoveries, deceptions, works of art, and futures for which we do not yet have names. Every world humanity has inhabited began as an idea. The next one will too. The question is no longer whether thought can change reality.
It always has.
The question is what happens when billions of thoughts can begin becoming real before wisdom has decided which of them should. Reality is moving closer to the speed of thought. What deserves to arrive?
